Intersection Repair
Ever dreamed of making the streets outside your abode more livable, pedestrian-friendly, and community-oriented? City Repair in Portland, Oregon hosts an annual Village Building Convergence where hundreds of people come together to build diverse projects for the benefit of their communities and to take back their streets. This involves painting streets with a high-visibility mural that creates a public square for residents to gather and one that gently encourages drivers to slow down when approaching these spaces. Over time the neighbors further enhance the transformation by adding amenities like benches, community bulletin boards, and introducing gardens & art. Trading Car Parking for Bike Parking.
In a historic first for New York City, the Department of Transportation has replaced three car parking spaces in Williamsburg with bike racks to accommodate about 30 bicycles.
Portland, OR, Bike Box
Earlier this year, Portland's Office of Transportation installed many high visibility bike boxes that are painted in lime green to help cyclist avoid right hook collisions.Crosswalks #1
With all the great achievements that are abounding in the livable streets movement, sometimes we need to revisit reality and look at the simple things- like why crosswalks and traffic control are so important.
Williamsburg Walks!
For three Saturdays Bedford Ave. has undergone a livable streets alchemy. One important distinction to make here: this is not a street fair in any sense of the word. It is simply a street that has been de-motorized and opened to allow residents to re-discover, re-imagine their street. They decide what they want to do.
Berkeley Bike Blvds.
In Berkeley, Calif. a citywide network of bicycle priority streets called Bicycle Boulevards allow cyclists to navigate safely. They are marked by smart traffic management, bountiful traffic calming, and the aura of livability and putting people first, cars second. Among their most unique trademarks are the purple signage and street stencils larger than a car!
Raised Crosswalk
This stop-animation Streetfilm illustrates the advantages of adding a raised crosswalk.
Raised crosswalks are good for locations where pedestrian crossings occur at haphazard locations and vehicle speeds are excessive.
SmartBike DC
The first North American public bike-share program, SmartBike, DC debuted with 120 bikes at 10 self-service racks. Learn more about how this service works. Queens Play Street
Jackson Heights is in the beginning stages of a great experiment - 78th Street between 34th Ave and Northern Boulevard is being closed for twenty consecutive weeks to provide a Play Street for children and their families! This is the work of many neighborhood groups, organizations and the NYC Department of Transportation. Bike New York also came out to teach children how to ride a bike.
Portland Sunday Parkways
Portland's first Ciclovia-style street closure, Sunday Parkways, was a smashing success with countless thousands of city residents participating. It was like a giant community block party with walkers, bikers, joggers, bladers, families, and pets filling the 6 mile course. For cities planning their own Ciclovias, here are some positive things about Portland's event: knowledgeable volunteers, lots of fun chalk messages on the ground, easy to follow directions, lots of music & entertainment, and a huge number of bike stations for bike repair.Paint a Parking Lot, Put Up a Paradise
In the Brooklyn DUMBO neighborhood the NYC Department of Transportation has launched the first of over thirty projects that will transform city streets over to public space uses.
What once was a triangle on Pearl Street for about two dozen car parking spots has become an oasis of green complete with chairs, tables, umbrellas and art. DOT Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan called the space, "anew living room for the neighborhood”.
PARKing Day 2008 NYC:
The first public showing of this film shot on September 19, 2008. National PARK(ing) Day has been a huge hit in NYC where Transportation Alternatives & The Trust for Public Land organized a of group of motley advocates in liberating parking spaces to open green areas for city residents to enjoy.
