Nordic Walking combines simplicity and accessibility of walking with simultaneous core and upper body conditioning similar to Nordic skiing. The result is a full-body walking workout that can burn significantly more calories and increase upper body strength and fitness. June 9th Walk & Talk: A Talk on Global Warming 5:30pm. Dan Friedlander leads an intermediate hike (3-4 miles) on Shanahan North trail to Mesa. The hike will explore how ecological change, particularly global warming, will affect our lives and our relationship to nature in the future. Destination: Ice Age 6 - 8:30pm. Twelve thousand years ago, mammoths lumbered through Boulder's cool deciduous forests. As glaciers melted, the climate dried up and the forests vanished...except for a few rare hidden pockets. Travel back with naturalist Dave Sutherland to one of the last remnants of the Ice Age where marvels await. Due to sensitivity of habitat, space is limited to 15. Enjoy an introduction to the area's biology, geology and history while hiking up to the Second Flatiron. Meet at Chautauqua Ranger Cottage for this moderately strenuous. 2.5 miles, 700' elevation gain. June 11th Park(ing) Spaces Day 10am - 2pm, various locations. See Community Cycles. for info. Visit "Park(ing) Spaces" all over town where businesses adopt a parking space and convert it into a "park" for one day by setting up grass, flowers, trees, chairs, etc. in the parking spot. Roll and Stroll Birdwatching (Wheelchair Program) 9:30am - 12pm Join Boulder County Audubon Society and OSMP on a bird-watching field trip at Boulder Valley Ranch. Knowledgeable Audubon birders team up with naturalist Topher Downham to provide this fun birdwatching experience to people who use walkers, wheelchairs, strollers and just plain old legs. Birdwatching begins on the Sage Trail at 9am. Bring hats, sunscreen, water, assistance if necessary, and binoculars if you have them, though some will be available to share. Extra wheelchairs available for assistance or just to experience. June 16th Stroll or Roll Wildflowers (Wheelchair Program) 5:30 - 7:30pm Wheelchair users and other people with disabilities will love this easy hike. Join naturalists Megan Bowes and Topher Downham for a stroll near South Boulder Creek looking for wildflowers in bloom. Extra wheelchairs available if needed of if you would like to try one out. Meet at S. Mesa Trailhead parking lot (N side of Eldorado Springs Rd). Geology for the Average Bear 6 - 8:30pm If you think geology is fascinating but too technical, this is the program for you. Boulder's rocks tell wild stories that include dinosaurs, glaciers, vast swamps, oceans and ancient mountain ranges now vanished into the dust of time. Join naturalist Dave Sutherland for an easy hike and a journey into Boulder's past. Meet at NCAR parking lot. 2 miles, 300 foot elevation gain. June 17th A Walking Tour of the historic Uni-Hill neighborhood Hosted by Boulder History Museum, 5:30pm Meeting location: Boulder History Museum, 1206 Euclid Ave., Boulder. Green Mountain: Top of the World 9am - 2pm Hike up shaded canyons to the incomparable views from Green Mountain Summit. We'll visit a fragile Habitat Conservation Area that protects some of Colorado's rarest plants; look and listen for forest birds, watch swarms of butterflies that congregate on the peak, and celebrate some of the best wildflower displays on OSMP. Naturalist Dave Sutherland and Volunteer Deb Martin will lead this very strenuous climb to the top of the world. Bring your lunch to eat on the summit. 5.5 miles, 2500 foot climb. This contest of wills and coordination pits corporate teams of three bikers and one pedestrian in a timed relay event, with each participant balancing a plastic egg filled with jelly beans in a spoon from their mouth...while negotiating an obstacle course.
