Last week, stacks of knee-high bicycles leaned against Community Cycles' workroom in Boulder, while volunteers worked to spruce up more.

The refurbished bikes -- some with sparkly tassels and princess pictures, others painted red with flames -- were just a few dozen of the nearly 300 that the nonprofit plans to give away to children younger than 10 on Sunday.

The bicycles at the fourth annual Holiday Kids Bike Giveaway are free, but Community Cycles is asking for a suggested donation of $20. Any money collected will be put back into the group's programs, which include maintenance classes and riding clinics.

"Our mission is to get people on bikes," said Josh Brown, Community Cycles' development director. "If we can get people on bikes younger, that's great."

The holiday bike giveaway, like all of Community Cycles' programs, relies heavily on volunteers, who have been working for weeks to tune up, repair and clean piles of donated bikes.

Ken Fowler first dropped into the organization's workshop to participate in the Earn-A-Bike program that allows people to trade volunteer hours for a bike. The program requires 10 hours of community service at the shop and another five hours of bike-maintenance clinics. For his community service, Fowler worked on getting bikes ready for the giveaway.

Now, his 15 hours are long gone, but Fowler is sticking around to make sure the giveaway goes well.

"It's been really fun," said Fowler, who was put to work changing tires and patching tubes. "It's the perfect time of year to volunteer."
