March 3, 2012 - The Art and Science of Bicycle Cargo

Bicycle Hauling Largo Cargo A barrier to cycling everyday is the need to transport larger items. Most casual cyclists will opt for a car or truck but with a little preparation and the right tools, bikes can carry almost everything a car can.

This workshop will show you how simple accessories like rear cargo racks, panniers, baskets and even backpacks can accommodate most of our daily in town needs. We'll discuss everyday activities like grocery shopping, trips to the post office, hardware store, soccer practice and others. We'll show off several types of trailers and discuss the pros and cons of each.

March 6, 2012 - Wheel Building Class

Wheel Building

Wheel Building

Have you ever wanted to learn how to build a bicycle wheel? This class will offer you the skills to find your spoke lengths, lace your wheel, tension it, and true it.  We strongly recommend that you know how to true a wheel and adjust hubs first, but no experience is necessary.  Look at our other workshops to learn these skills first.

We will go over the following topics: crash course on wheels, spoke calculation, wheel-building tools and materials, hub holes and spacing, lubrication of spokes, lacing wheels, lateral true, radial true, and dish.

This class is designed to teach you how to build a wheel, but you will need to provide your own materials or purchase them from us to be able to take the wheel you build.  We will teach you how to build a wheel, so if you choose not to keep it, your wheel will go to our community bike shop and help support our programs.

You're also welcome to become a member and build a wheel during our open shop hours.

This class is set for 3 hours and is limited to 6 students.  This class is being taught by Brett Schager

Cost: $100
Cost for members: $90

June 2, 2012 - Lose 3,000 lbs., and feel great! Going car-free in a practical world

Going Car-Free in Boulder ColoradoIn this workshop, we'll get started by discussing the reasons why it makes sense to go car-free, including saving money, improving personal health, discovering the social effects of an "out-of-car experience", enjoying being outside, and reducing our environmental impact. Once we've shared why a car-free life may seem preferable, we'll get into the nitty-gritty of what it takes to make that happen without any feeling of deprivation in our lives.

We'll talk openly about common concerns such as time crunch, safety, cargo hauling, career attire, weather, longer distances, and more. We'll include the topic of, "But what about when you simply need a car?"

This workshop is aimed specifically at practical people with practical lives. The focus will be a discussion of how we can live in the real world without a car, enjoying the positive attributes of that freedom while not feeling any sense of deprivation. Career professionals, homeowners, families, middle-aged folks, and others are encouraged to come participate in this workshop. Please come prepared to be a part of the discussion, and learn from each other's concerns and experiences.

TBA - Do-It-Yourself Panniers

Bike Bucket Panniers Boulder ColoradoNeed new panniers but can’t spare the cash? Tired of getting a racing stripe up your back after riding wet roads? Want to try out bike commuting without a big cash outlay? This workshop is for you.

Even if you can’t remember “righty-tighty, lefty-loosie”, we’ll walk through the steps together to create bucket panniers of our very own. These panniers made from kitty litter buckets are waterproof and virtually indestructible, and even double as camp chairs! They can be made to easily attach and detach to your bike rack, or be fixed to the rack for more security.

If you'd rather have a backpack pannier, bring a backpack. We'll add a hook and bungee system to allow you to hook your trusty pack to your bike, then comfortably take it with you when you reach your destination.

Please come to this class with a rack already attached to your bike. We can still make panniers if you have no rack, but they will better fit you and your bike if we can test-fit the panniers on the rack. We are accepting donations of kitty litter buckets and backpacks for this workshop.

Materials fee: $15 for one bucket pannier or $10 for one backpack conversion. Please specify bucket or backpack and fixed or removable when you register.

Ann Haebig will lead this workshop

Feb 11, 2012 - Professional Drivetrain Cleaning / Lubrication

Dirty Bicycle ChainIf you ride your bike outdoors, it will get dirty. And your drivetrain gets grimier than any other part of the bicycle. We're talking about three components: The chain, crankset, and rear cluster. Whereas a dirty frame is only an aesthetic concern, riding with an unclean and/or un-lubricated drivetrain has serious consequences: the chain and everything it touches will wear out at a much faster rate. The bike may become noisy and/or develop a rough, crunchy feeling while pedaling. It may not shift as well as it should. And enough filthy build-up can mask worn or damaged components.

This workshop will reveal how shop-pros clean and reassemble a drivetrain. This involves the removal of your chain, drive-side crank, and cassette/freewheel. Once your drivetrain is clean and lubed, we'll cover tips for maintaining it in that condition.

Chris Campbell will lead this workshop

Jan 28, 2012 - Single-Speed Conversion

Shifters and Derailleurs WorkshopThis class will be a two-hour informational session on how to convert a regular drivetrain to a single-speed setup. There will be examples and an explanation of the tools and parts necessary. Single-speeds are great for riding on relatively flat landscapes, e.g. downtown boulder, and the minimalism makes them aesthetically pleasing to many. Basic bike knowledge is recommended but not required. If you are looking to convert a bike you currently have, bring it and we can talk about the specifics of how to do it. People are also encouraged to buy a membership and stay in the afternoon to apply the knowledge from the class and actually convert their bike.

This workshop is being taught by Sam Reis and Nate Kawa.
