In Killed by a Traffic Engineer, civil engineering professor Wes Marshall shines a spotlight on how little science there is behind the way that our streets are engineered, which leaves safety as an afterthought.
Thoroughly researched and compellingly written, Killed by a Traffic Engineer shows how traffic engineering “research” is outdated and unexamined (at its best) and often steered by an industry and culture considering only how to get from point A to B the fastest way possible, to the detriment of safety, quality of life, equality, and planetary health.
In this special Friday evening, Wes will discuss our need for speed and how traffic engineers disconnected it from safety, the focus on capacity and how it influences design, and the myriad of other factors that have resulted in streets that are deadly for cyclists, pedestrians and people driving. And we’ll talk about the path forward.
Martha Roskowski will lead the conversation with Wes, and she’ll offer insight into the national picture on transportation, including the influx of federal transportation funding, the upcoming reauthorization of the federal transportation bill, and a new effort to convince states to direct more funding to projects that advance climate, equity and safety outcomes.

Bios:
Wes Marshall, PhD, PE, is a professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Colorado Denver, where he holds a joint appointment in urban planning. He serves as director of the CU Denver Human-Centered Transportation program and the Transportation Research Center at CU Denver.
Martha Roskowski is a Boulder-based consultant, currently advising the Office of the Secretary at USDOT, The Funders Network and Clean RIDES Network. She has championed protected bike lanes at PeopleForBikes, worked for the City of Boulder’s transportation department, led the bike community’s campaign on a federal reauthorization, and served as the Executive Director of Bicycle Colorado.
