Walk & Bike to School Day

Across the US, communities will celebrate Walk to School Day on Wednesday, October 10th, 2018. Dozens of schools in the Boulder Valley School District (BVSD) will join in the fun by hosting Walk to School Day events at their schools. Students will be encouraged to walk or bike to school to build community, promote health, contribute to a cleaner planet and champion safer routes to school. Many BVSD children who ride the bus will also join in the fun by participating in Ride & Strides, where busses drop students off a few blocks from school, giving them the opportunity to walk to school.

Eco-Cycle will partner with BVSD to collect used shoes at several schools. The shoes collected will be sorted and sent to communities in need via USAgain, providing a great opportunity for kids to help keep shoes they have outgrown, or no longer need, out of landfills.

The School Food Project is also a sponsor of Walk to School Day and will provide locally grown apples to several schools to be handed out to kids as they arrive to school.

Because healthy eating and active living go hand in hand, the SFP is happy to support Walk to School Day. As a double win, the apples donated are all grown in Colorado, giving local agriculture an added boost!

The goal of Walk to School Day is to promote safe streets and healthy kids through the practices of walking and cycling to school. Walk to School Day began in 1997 as an international event to encourage walking to school to boost healthy habits, safe streets and clean air. Enthusiasm for walking and biking to school continues to grow. Last year, over 5,500 schools participated in Walk to School Day, making it the largest celebration in its 20 year history.
