Local and National Grants Support More Access to Bicycles

comcyc777News

The end of each year seems to go by quickly here at Community Cycles. In December we host two Kids Holiday Bike Giveaways and serve the Boulder community at our retail store through the holiday season. We also ask our loyal base of Members and followers to support us on Colorado Gives Day and through year-end giving. During this time, we also received grants to support more access to bicycles.

Throughout that hectic time of year, we still keep in our sight on what it means to have the support from individuals, businesses, foundations and government agencies throughout the year. We are honored to have received a number of grants and donations that allowed us to expand current programs and to begin 2023 strong.

While no means a complete list, we would like to acknowledge and thank:

Sean McQuerry gets a huge shout out as an individual donor for doubling the funding we had for tire recycling. With his help, we were able to recycle over 4,000 bicycle tires at no charge to our customers. Watch the Interview where Sean tells us why he became involved.

Clif Family Foundation for their grant to support our work lobbying the City of Boulder to reach the Vision Zero goal of eliminating traffic fatalities and severe injuries among all road users — while increasing safe, healthy, equitable mobility.

City of Boulder Climate Initiatives program for their grant to help fund tire recycling at Eco-Cycle. We were already recycling bike tires out of our operating budget. This allowed us to put a portion of that budget towards other programs.

City of Boulder for their continued support of Winter Bike to Work Day and June’s Walk and Bike Month.

Boulder County supports Community Cycles in a number of ways each year. This year we’d like to thank them for their 2023 grant for recycling bikes, along with continued support of Winter Bike to Work Day and June’s Walk and Bike Month. In 2023 we’ll expand our Earn-a-Bike program to Boulder County Housing Authority sites with support and funding from Boulder County.

KRD Foundation, our “Kid’s Champion”. Through their support we were able to fund more bike collection drives, reward our volunteers, handle increased costs of bike parts, and generally support our staff. Read why kid’s bikes are so important to them.

Team Evergreen Cycling for their grant in support of our oldest program for children, the Kid’s Holiday Bike Giveaway. Their support allows us to collect, fix and gift over 350 bikes to low income children in our community.

The State of Colorado Dept of Transportation,  Colorado Energy Office and DRCOG for funding our upcoming ebike programs. These grants will promote and facilitate longer-distance EBike commuting, along with getting more ebikes out to people who will use them for commuting.

Boulder BCycle: as part of the Can Do Colorado Grant, we were able to give away 30 Boulder BCycle 2-year passes for low income commuters.

Moving the Needle on Climate Change

This thank you wouldn’t be complete without a shout out to our Community Cycles’ grant writers and other Staff, Volunteers, and Board of Directors, under the leadership of our Executive Director Sue Prant and Board President Elaine Erb.

Altogether we are moving the needle on climate change. We’re a community organization making bicycling a truly sustainable, equitable, and affordable means of everyday transportation; where human-powered transportation is prioritized in fact and not just in words; and where transportation betters all residents’ lives physically, emotionally, and economically.
