Community Cycles Transit Policy

Community Cycles believes every person deserves a genuine, reliable alternative to driving. That requires two actions working together: frequent, accessible public transit as the backbone of our regional mobility network, and a complete active transportation infrastructure to connect people to it. Bikes, pedestrians, buses, and trains are not separate causes — they are parts of a single system, and that system only works when all of its parts work together.

Community Cycles affirms that robust public transit, fully integrated with a complete active transportation network, is the most effective and equitable path to reducing motor vehicle dependency in our community.

What We Stand For

Transit as the backbone. A bus that comes infrequently is not a meaningful alternative to a car. Community Cycles supports sustained investment in bus, BRT, and rail service with emphasis on frequency, reliability, and affordability. Transit must be good enough to choose over the automobile.

Active transportation completes the trip. The first and last mile is where transit trips break down. A connected network of protected bikeways, pedestrian infrastructure, and traffic-calmed streets is not separate from transit investment — it is what makes transit investment work.

Safety and equity as prerequisites. Low-income residents, people of color, older adults, and people without car access depend most on transit and active transportation, and have historically received the least investment. Safe infrastructure and quality service must be prioritized in underserved communities.

Motor vehicle reduction as the goal. Fewer car trips means cleaner air, fewer traffic deaths, lower emissions, and more livable streets. Community Cycles supports parking reform, transit-oriented development, and road space reallocation that removes structural advantages now given to private motor vehicles.

What We're Asking For

• Increased, sustained public funding for transit frequency and reliability
• Protected walking and cycling infrastructure connecting people to every transit stop
• Secure bike parking, bike share, and bikes-on-transit access system-wide
• Dedicated bus lanes and transit signal priority to make transit competitive with driving
• Complete Streets policies on all new and reconstructed roads
• Reduced parking minimums and transit-oriented zoning near transit corridors
• Affordable fares and Safe Routes to Transit programming for all ages and abilities

Community Cycles calls on governments, transit agencies, and planners to invest in a multimodal network where taking the bus, riding a bike, and walking are the easiest choices available. Transit and active transportation succeed together — or not at all.
