Success Elsewhere and in the U.S.

It is possible to transition away from car dependence. It is possible to transition away from car dependence. Many cities in Europe and Asia have accomplished this. Some cities in North America are getting close.

North American Cities

Even in North America, cities like Montreal, Vancouver, Davis, and Minneapolis are taking huge strides. Vancouver already has a 50% walk-bike-transit mode share, Montreal is investing in 200 km of new bike lanes, and bikes are about 20% of the mode share in Davis, California.

Oulu, Finland & Oslo, Norway

The same basic recipe for success has been used in both Finland and Norway, both places that, like Boulder, have significant winter weather. The key, of course, is plowing streets well in the winter, an area in which Boulder is likely to make real progress, having recently acquired new plows capable of plowing narrow bike lanes. The City is also looking to make improvements to its response to snow and ice. More on this effort can be found here.

Amsterdam, Netherlands & Copenhagen, Denmark

Both the Netherlands and Denmark are famed for having successfully transitioned away from car dependence in and around major cities like Amsterdam and Copenhagen. In both cities, this has been achieved by reallocating roadway space to enable safer walking and biking, building high-quality mass transit, and providing both secure bike parking and ample bike rentals for the last mile.
